Apartment complex Negligent securityWrongful death

The owners and former management company of an apartment complex in Sanford agreed to pay $8.6 million to the family of a 33-year-old man who was shot and killed there in 2022, WFTV reported in June 2024.

He was visiting the complex when he was shot. His family sued for negligence, saying the complex had no working security cameras, a broken gate and no security guards, and that it did not run proper background checks on residents. The man convicted of the killing, a repeat violent offender, was living at the complex without authorization. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

WFTV reported that the suit settled for $8.6 million. It did not say how the payment was split between the owners and the management company. The date is when the settlement was reported, not when it was signed.
