The owner of an apartment complex on Jacksonville’s Westside agreed to pay $3.6 million to the family of a 28-year-old tenant who was shot and killed inside his unit, News4JAX reported in July 2022. The case settled about two weeks before it was set for trial.
Two people opened his door on the afternoon of December 20, 2017, and shot him several times in front of his 10-year-old daughter. The killing remains unsolved.
His family sued in Duval County in 2018, alleging negligent security. They said the complex lacked adequate cameras, gates, guards and regular patrols, and did not hire off-duty officers despite requests from residents, employees and the sheriff’s office. Court documents cited violent incidents going back to 2008, and the family’s lawyers said there had been 10 shootings on the property between the owner’s purchase in November 2016 and the killing.
At the time, the complex was owned and managed by two companies controlled by the same person. It has since changed management and its name. The date is when the settlement was reported.
