A Miami-Dade County jury returned a $100 million verdict in the 2021 shooting death of a 23-year-old man at a condominium complex.
His mother sued the condominium association, its property management company and its security contractor. She argued the attack was foreseeable because the shooter had come onto the property armed earlier in 2021 and the complex was in a known high-crime area, and that the defendants failed to secure the property, protect residents and guests, or warn of the danger.
The jury apportioned fault 57 percent to the property manager, 18 percent to the condominium association, 18 percent to the security company and 7 percent to the tenant of the unit. The shooter has pleaded guilty to the killing.
The verdict came after about four years of litigation. We have not found a report of post-trial motions or an appeal.
