Cooperative apartment association Mold and water intrusion

A Broward County jury awarded $5.5 million to a resident who sued her cooperative apartment association in Pompano Beach over years of water leaks and mold in her unit.

She said water came through the building’s exterior walls into her unit for years and that management did not make repairs despite her repeated complaints. The jury found the association failed to remediate the damage and that she was harmed.

Her complaint also tied the 2021 death of her longtime partner from brain cancer to the exposure, and it sought more than $30 million. The building is a cooperative, in which residents own shares in the property rather than their individual units.
